Pioneers! O Pioneers! illustrated Walt Whitman's poem of the same title in book form.
The poem focuses on the American spirit and Manifest Destiny. To illustrate that, the book's spreads open up to a large gap to suggest the crossing the early pioneers took across the American plains. The use of relief printmaking, craft paper, and American flag colors is meant to give a rustic aesthetic that Whitman's poetry gives off.
